MADE IN CHICAGO

Monday 9.50pm, ABC1

Inexpensively made but compelling nonetheless, this Obama biography focusing on the Chicago years provides plenty of insights and a few surprises. Excerpts from Obama's 2008 speeches are smartly intercut with a wide range of interviews with people who worked with and for him - and employed him - as well as activists and intellectuals who put his Chicago work in context. It's a positive picture of the man but not adoring. Everyone here approaches the questions - who is he, what formed him - thoughtfully and largely without stars in their eyes. The result is a textured and enlightening portrait of one of the most remarkable politicians of our time. Plus, boy, he's photogenic.
